Backing The Wagon Up

Sometimes you just have to get back to basics.

Healthy eating. Regular exercise. Plenty of sleep.

A while back, I was on a nice little bit of fitness and dieting. I lost 45 pounds, and was feeling pretty good. Even the badgers thought I looked leaner and more heroic, and built me a new treadmill so that I could go for a run without getting lost.

Ironically, it was taking a few weeks off work for the Olympics that knocked me off the wagon. There I was, sitting on the sofa rather a lot, enjoying the grandeur of London's Finest Hour, and I started reaching for the phone.

A medium meaty pizza? Extra olives and jalapeños? Diet Coke?
Yes Sir, thirty minutes!

And after I fell off the wagon, it backed up over me a few times just make sure I couldn't get back on. I could still reach the phone, but was short of breath.

A large pizza? Garlic bread? Chicken dippers? Dr. Pepper?
Yes Sir, twenty minutes!

It dawned on me that, other than putting quite a bit of the weight back on (and encouraging the pizza house to deliver faster) I was slow, tired and lacking enthusiasm for creative work. Also, my good friend Kato in Toronto was poised to eat healthily for 30 days, and I do like to support my friends in their endeavours.

So, I hailed a taxi, caught the wagon up, and heaved myself back on it.

Wish me luck with my new mantra... *

Indigo Roth’s EAT NO PIZZA
Thirty days is just the start; but it's a nice achievable target, and I do so like those. As someone smart once said:

Most folk don't need a Diet, they need a change of Lifestyle.

This, I believe, is Wisdom.

But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

One step at a time, right?

[ * BTW, do you like my t-shirt? That's Pearl on it, that is. You know Pearl right? The tee is a limited edition of 23. It's a full colour print (not a transfer), there's tons of different styles, so click here quick if you want a piece of Pearly history. ]

  2. Someday and someday soon, I'm hitching a ride on that wagon myself. I'm sort of hoping that day will be today, and as long as I stay out of the ice cream, I'll have started that ride. Good luck to you, Indigo!

Have you got a hobby to do as a distraction? I'm thinking about pizza making.

    1. Hey Jules! Welcome to the blog! Hobbies? Tons of 'em, no time to get them all done. So, assuming I don't sit in front of NFL gootball feeling hungry all season, I should be okay! See you again, Indigo

  5. I heard somewhere that people watching the Olympics gained an average of six pounds in the U.S. and eight pounds in England. I actually was inspired to be more active, so I didn't gain any weight until after the Olympics. Less chocolate and a little more activity would help.

    1. Hey Nancy! You know, I'd not heard that, but they're pretty much bang on for me! I was inspired, but didn't make the time. But now I'm trying to make up for it. No pizza or choccy for over a week; I'm getting somewhere. Indigo x

    1. Hey Alistair! It's very hard to make that kind of change; forever is a long time. But the young badgers are intercepting any hot deliveries to the house; how nice to have such sweet, hungry friends. Indigo

  9. Good for you both! Best of luck. The first week seems to be the hardest, or is that just me?

My wagon was trundling along pretty good until the hot, hot weather arrived. I'm trying to jump back on, now that it's a bit cooler, and find it's easier to prepare healthier food, it's easier to go for walks, and it's easier to sleep. A trifecta of easier. But still not easy :)

    1. Hey Jen! The first week is the worst. The second week? That's the worst too. And after that it's all uphill. But yes, the Eat/Sleep/Exercise trio is the secret. Indigo x

  10. We have pizza about twice a month. My husband Alex would eat it every day if I let him. I do cook with all fresh ingredients and usually organic stuff. And I limit our portions. You can imagine my irritation when I run into fast food wrappers in Alex's car. (e.g., I send him a sensible lunch, broiled chicken breast, green salad, rice, and mango.) So what does he do? Runs out for a snack. Uh huh.
